Martin Luther King Day is on the 20th of January 2014, marking the 28th anniversary that America celebrates the federal holiday. This day commemorates Martin Luther King Jr., a civil rights leader whose dream was to end racial segregation.
"Martin Luther King is a virtuous leader whose philosophy is inspirational. This day is invaluable for those who admire his work for civil rights," said Ismael Hernandez, Senior.
There are a few traditions on the King Holiday. It is seen as a day to promote equal rights. The plan for MLK Day is to start the year off right by helping out others with no intention of gaining anything in return. Some Americans come together to serve their neighbors and community.
"He's motivated me to foster world peace and non violent responses," said Pablo Gonzales, senior.
King was assassinated in 1968 and shortly after a campaign was started to begin a holiday to honor the famous figure on his birthday. Once the first bill was introduced, trade unions helped through a campaign to make his birthday a federal holiday. It was later endorsed a few years later in 1976 and was first observed in 1986.
"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character" -Martin Luther King Jr.
