Roaring Back
By: Eunice Lemus
A majority of Americans know the teenage dream, the star as bright as a firework, the queen of the jungle with an empowering roar. Katy Perry released her hit single, "Roar," August of 2013. This song has quickly become a song that has inspired teens to stand up for themselves and be heard.
"I agree with the message and that you should stick up for yourself when people are trying to bring you down," said Channah, sophmore at RLT.
Katy wants people to hear the deeper meaning of sticking up for oneself. In the music video, she finds herself in a jungle surrounded by airplane ruins. Perry begins to follow what appears to be another tourist. However, the tourist does not survive for long. Metaphorically, the jungle represents the pitfalls and struggles that society creates on a daily basis. While some are consumed by the "jungle," others find the strength to survive.
"People look up to her and when they see her doing that, then they want to be confident too," Olivia Gray, senior at RLT.
Despite the positive message and catchy rhythms, not everyone is on the same page. While some say that Perry's roar is strong, others say her "roar" is more of a meow.
"She's just a person with colorful hair and a glittery face," said Mahaa Noorani, freshman.
